Week Two

Well here are some more highlights from the never dull job of PE teacher.
First couple days of last week I must have been speaking a foreign language. No one would listen to me. Some kids just don't know when to zip their lip. I had to be the mean person a couple of times. I think they got the point. The thing that helped me through was Sam coming into class and giving me a great big hug. Nothing better!!
Guess how many cans of AXE deodorant spray 4th grade boys can go through in a day? More then I want to know. But when the fog and smell make it into the gym, you know it's way to much. Had to open up doors and windows to air it out. Boys will be boys!!!
Have you ever seen a mouse play dead? Me either but one of my pre-k kids was trying to convince me that the one she was holding up by the tail was. Can you say gross?! It was not a pretty sight to me, but the kids thought it was cute and cuz it had its eyes open it was just pretending to be dead!!!
Yesterday was going well until my last group of kids came in. I'm still trying to put all the pieces together, but one boy fell and knocked out his front tooth - root and all!! All I saw was him fall, the tooth go flying, him getting up, and lots of blood. Can you say think fast? I got him laid down with a fan on him cuz he was very light headed. Told someone to go to the office and have his mom called so she could get him to the dentist. We put his tooth in some milk and got him cleaned up a little. I met his mom part way to town and passed him off. On the way in his other front tooth came out. The dentist was able to put them both back in and bond them to some other teeth. Not sure which ones cuz the teeth on either side of the front ones were also loose. I'm praying that the teeth aren't damaged and they will stay in place. Wow! I'm hoping that is all in the way of injuries this year.
Today we managed to not have anything major happen. There was one little girl that had a bug bite on her arm and didn't think she could run! She did OK though.

A New Beginning

Wow, what a week! Nothing like jumping in with both feet. Thought I would let you in on a few of my funny stories from the first 4 days of teaching PE. Now just keep in mind that there are 100+ kids coming in from 12:10 - 3:10. I have them in 30 minute slots. They have to change shoes twice - once before we start and then again when we are done. They are pre-K through 6th grade.
Day 1 - A 4th grade boy took a dare to jump off the top of the bleachers. I didn't see this, but he "really sprained his ankle." He wondered if he should go to the office. I was about to let him until I saw him limping. Let's just say Jacob can fake limp better then that! Turns out he doesn't like music and wanted out. Pretty sure he is going to be OK! :) I also made a Pre-K little girl cry! I never let her have a turn. I had asked someone to go get a ball for me. She wanted to do it and I told her next time. You would have thought I ran over her puppy.
Day 2 - Got the message that a Kinder. wasn't at school because he twisted his ankle in PE the day before. This was news to me because nothing happened that I was aware of. Wed. (day 3) he shows up on crutches. I know sounds bad. But when he came into the gym he was running with his crutches held out. He comes up to me and wonders what game we are going to play!!! I had to be the bad guy and make him sit out that day! Good news - today he was running without any problem. PTL it was a miracle!
Day 3 - Is it just me or is it unusual for a 2nd grade girl to wear a skirt w/o any underwear? This came the day after I had sent a note to the parents about girls wearing shorts under their dress or skirts! Didn't think I needed to mention underwear!! Note to self for next year - must have children wear underwear to PE! I also had to get on to the 4th grade boys for hitting the girls with clothes baskets. No one would fess up to the crime so all the boys got to run. By about the third time everyone was ratting out the bad guy! Girls thought it was great. Guys now know that I mean what I say.
Day 4 - Today a little girl told me she broke her wrist. Yikes. She was pushing it down as far as it would go. I asked if she could move it. Good new - full range of motion restored right after we started the next game.
Boy what a week. Believe it or not I love it. I'm learning what kind of things I need to do for which group of kids. Gotta be flexible and adjust as needed. Friday we are suppose to go to a water park in Enid for the afternoon which means I won't have PE!!! But of course there is rain in the forecast. Think I better be ready just in case.
Hope you all get a kick out of this.
